Rollover IRA

Brief Description
If you've changed jobs or recently retired, a Rollover IRA can help you take control of your retirement assets and preserve the tax advantages you have with your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored plan. An Ameriprise Rollover IRA is an easy-to-manage account that provides you with expanded investment options and professional guidance when you need it.¹ With an Ameriprise Rollover IRA, you can also:
  • Expand your investment options to include stocks, bonds and more than 3,000 mutual funds.
  • Choose to meet in person with a financial advisor for professional guidance.
  • Get the assistance you need to make the rollover process easy.
Contribution Amount
  • There are no limits on amount of rollover dollars.
The Upside
  • It gives you control over investment of your retirement assets.
  • Provides a greater range of investment options — including stocks, bonds and mutual funds — than most employer retirement plans.
  • It maintains tax-deferred status of the account.
The Downside
  • As with all IRAs, withdrawals before age 59 1/2 may be subject to a 10% IRS penalty tax for early withdrawal.
Important Notes
  • Do not accept a check for the proceeds from your former employer's plan. The employer will be required to withhold 20%, even if you plan to immediately redeposit it. Moreover, unless you redeposit the entire value (your check plus the 20% withholding), you will be required to pay income taxes plus a penalty tax on the 20% withheld. We can walk you through the rollover process and help you avoid tax penalties and withholdings.
